About this task
Listen to a Conversation plays a short campus or workplace exchange between two speakers, about 30 to 90 seconds long, and then asks two multiple-choice questions that only appear after the audio has stopped. There is no replay button, so the questions test what you retained rather than what you can go back and check, and the harder items ask what a speaker meant rather than what they literally said. This practice mode plays fresh two-speaker audio for every scenario, holds the questions until the clip ends just like the real test, and scores your answers as soon as you submit. Because the topics and speaker dynamics repeat in predictable patterns, campus dialogues are one of the more trainable parts of the Listening section.
- Fix both speakers' roles in the first two lines: the main-purpose answer is usually settled in the first ten seconds.
- Rejected plans get said out loud, so note which one is agreed to last; the wrong answers are the earlier proposals.
- Keep notes in two columns, one per speaker; a single column loses who wanted what, which is what gets asked.
- Mark attitude with a plus or minus as you listen, since the harder items ask what a speaker meant, not what they said.

How long is a TOEFL 2026 listening conversation?
About 30 to 90 seconds, roughly ten conversational turns between two speakers. The pre-2026 test used two long conversations with five questions each; the 2026 version replaces those with several short dialogues, so there is far less room to recover if you lose the thread.
How many questions follow each TOEFL conversation?
Two in most reported formats, though at least one source describes sets of two to four. The ETS blueprint lists 10 Listen to a Conversation items in the Listening section overall, which works out to about five conversations if each carries two questions.
Can you take notes during TOEFL listening conversations?
Yes. ETS states that you can take notes while listening to help you answer the questions. You need them here, because the questions do not appear until the audio has finished and there is no replay button.
What is the difference between Listen and Choose a Response and Listen to a Conversation?
Listen and Choose a Response gives you a single exchange and asks you to pick the reply, targeted at CEFR A1 to B2. Listen to a Conversation gives you a full short dialogue and asks comprehension questions afterward, targeted at A2 to C1, so the harder items test speaker intent and implied meaning rather than literal content.
How are TOEFL 2026 listening conversations scored?
Each question is machine scored multiple choice worth one point, with no partial credit and no penalty for a wrong guess. Your correct answers across all four Listening task types feed a section band from 1.0 to 6.0 in half-point steps, aligned to the CEFR.
